The Elements Of The Story Plot: The author recounts the childhood of little Elena in the U.S. and their experience with first love. Characters: Elena, Eugene. Setting: Paterson, New Jersey “El building”. Conflict: The conflict in the story is that Elena is between her dreams and hopes and the brute reality that she has to face because of her ethnicity.

The Elements Of The Story Theme: The Theme is confronting racism as a young Puerto Rican girl. Author’s Purpose: The author teaches us about the racism that Elena have to go through in school. Main Idea: The main idea concerns the nature of prejudice and discrimination and how the experience of America is a nation parallels the experience of Elena herself.

The Elements Of The Story Fact: The death of President Kennedy. Opinion: It seems that Elena and Eugene were never able to continue their relationship. Cause: The black girls gave Elena the nickname of skinny bones. Effect: Elena is shy and scared of going to school. Sequence of events: In the story Elena finds a boy she likes and he ask her to come over to study but her parents don’t approve of her going over he’s house.
