Transition Children came to visit their new class each week during the last half term of FS2. They were introduced to new routines and met their new teacher. The children have all made a good start and have settled in well into Year 1.

We like Parents to Be Involved Homework – Your child will receive homework each Friday, which needs to be completed by Wednesday. Please feel free to help your child with their homework. Letter and number Formation - It is important that your child can form their letters and numbers correctly. Children will bring some handwriting home each Friday to work on. Reading – The children have all been given a reading diary and a reading book. Please try to listen to your child read for 5-10 minutes each night and record this in their reading diary. Each time it has been recorded that your child has read to an adult they will move along the reading track. Your child will continue to receive Bear Words, which need to be practiced at home and they will be tested on these weekly. Spellings – Each Wednesday your child will be tested on their spellings and they will receive new spellings in their reading diary.

Bear Words Combining early reading and phonic development with key words, as stated in ‘Letters and Sounds: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics.’ Bears highlight the high frequency key words and support the implementation of short and long vowel phoneme/grapheme correspondences, as defined in ‘Letters and Sounds.’ These act as the springboard into reading and are used alongside our daily phonic teaching. Children progress from this onto spellings. Bear words and spellings are to be practiced at home and children will be tested weekly.

A whole school approach to encourage children to read regularly at home with an adult. Each day that you record your child has read to an adult, they will move up the reading track. Prizes 15 on the number track is a wrist band. 25 is a bookmark 50 is a book In addition to this children will be entered in a prize draw to win a kindle. Reading Challenge

How did…happen? When/where did the story take place? What is the character like? Which part of the story best describes the setting? Explain how the author made this character seem happy/sad. What words give you the impression that… Can you invent a new title? Can you predict the outcome of a chapter/episode? Can you tell me what you think about….? What evidence can you find to support your opinion? Could the story be improved? How? Suggestions for how to help children with reading. Here are some examples of questions you could ask to extend your child’s reading skills…

PE Kits All children have now received their own uniform PE kit. Please ensure PE kits and school uniforms are clearly labelled with your child’s name. It is important that your child has his/her PE kit in school on PE days. These are on Tuesday and Thursday. These can stay at school throughout each half term. Please ask at the school office, should you need to purchase any new uniform PE kit.

Assessment Targets Children are assessed at the end of each term and will be given end of year targets; Emerging, Expected, Exceeding. Children have their targets in their English and Maths books.

Assessment Phonics Screening It is a statutory requirement that children undertake a phonics screening check towards the end of year 1. If children do not achieve the statutory benchmark, they will be required to retake in Year 2. This is a short, simple screening check to make sure that all pupils have grasped fundamental phonics skills and to see that nobody slips through the net. It comprises a list of 40 words and non-words, which a child will read one-to-one with a teacher.

Achievement Assembly Each week a child is selected to receive an award in Achievement assembly on Friday morning, for a special school achievement. When your child has been selected, you will receive a letter to inform you and invite you to attend the assembly.

Clubs and extended services We offer many after school clubs and activities as well as out of school club. Letters are sent home to inform you of available after school clubs at the end of each half term. These are very popular and children may be placed on a waiting list.

Thank you so much for coming to meet with us today and for your continued support.
