Changing the look of equations The objective when we solve a linear equation, is to isolate the variable. We use the opposite of a term to move it away from the variable. For example:

Shortcut! A shortcut is to just write the opposite on the other side of the equal sign. For example:

Changing the look of equations We accomplished exactly the same thing, but it looks less cluttered. This technique is called transforming the equation. Let’s try another:

The Rules If a term jumps the equal sign in either direction, it has to change its sign. I call this Hop and Swap. Hop the = and change your sign!
