The first test in each subject continues to be free. Both the MN House and Senate have kept an additional $120,000 for free GED testing. At current rates, if this amount is appropriated, the free GED will end sometime in fall How long will the GED be free in MN?

GEDTS sent an to all GED passers encouraging them to connect with their local ABE programs to participate in their graduation or see if there are other possibilities. Better Together The metro event in Roseville and the south event in Mankato have been held and there is one more event that will be held in Grand Rapids this coming Monday. For those who attended a small “seed” grant opportunity is offered for activities that include libraries, workforce development and Adult Basic Education. Up to $50,000 is available through Adult Education Transition Regions for projects led by adult basic education and include library and workforce partners. Maximum award is $5,000 and Adult Basic Education will serve as fiscal agent for funded projects. At least one partner must attend a Better Together regional workshop in April or May Selection decisions will be made no later than June 30, Completed applications must be ed to no later than June 15,

Adult Pathways to Postsecondary 2016 Adult Pathways to Postsecondary Mini-grant Proposal: Guidelines: This funding is designed to increase collaboration between Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) and Minnesota Adult Basic Education (ABE). The goal of increasing collaboration is to improve learner success in transitioning to and through postsecondary education. Timeline: Proposals are due Monday, May 23, 2016 to Jessica Espinosa at MnSCU: Communication of awards and grant funds allocated to MnSCU institutions by Friday, June 10, Funds must be encumbered by the awarded MnSCU campus before September 30, All funds must be spent no later than December 30, 2016.

Options for receiving this training:  Annual CCRS Implementation Cohort: Two 2-day institutes (1 fall, 1 winter), kickoff & wrap up webinars, implementation tasks between meetings Prerequisite: Part I, CCRS Foundations for ELA or Math  After 2017: Individual training modules (workshop + follow-up) for training components Options for receiving this training:  Summer Institute pre-conference, 1 full day  ELA: Language & Literacy Institute  Math: Math Institute  CCRS Foundations online course Part I CCRS Foundations ELA shifts: Text complexity, Evidence, Knowledge Math shifts: Focus, Coherence, Rigor 8 Math Practices Part II Instructional Planning & Classroom Practice Aligning Resources Aligning Lessons Aligning Student Tasks Observing Standards-Based Lessons

Program teams will learn to align curriculum and instruction to the CCR standards and develop a long-term standards implementation plan for their program Program application: 3-5 individuals (at least 1 administrator, 1 ELA teacher, 1 math teacher); opportunity to add more later if there is space All future adult diploma programs will need to go through CCRS cohort training prior to launch Timeline: Application due June 10, notified by June 27 Application:

Program teams participating in the cohort will be able to: Articulate the benefits of standards-based education for their students, program, & staff Align materials and resources used regularly in ABE instruction Articulate which standards are being addressed in courses and instruction Improve instruction and courses to incorporate shifts and standards appropriate to student levels Develop a long-term standards implementation plan for their local program Administrators participating in the cohort will be able to: Conduct standards-focused classroom observations and teacher feedback sessions to support implementation and improve instruction Identify supports and resources instructors may need to implement standards-based instruction Instructors participating in the cohort will be able to: Improve units, lesson plans, and student tasks to incorporate shifts and standards appropriate to student levels Participate in standards-focused classroom observations and teacher feedback sessions to support implementation and improve instruction

Kick-off webinar on September 15, 2016 from 2:00-3:30 pm In-person workshops on October 6-7, 2016 in Burnsville Mid-year webinar(s) in late fall/early winter (exact dates TBD) In-person workshops on February 23-24, 2017 in Burnsville End-of-year webinar(s) in spring (exact dates TBD) Participation in team meetings and completion of implementation tasks throughout the year at your site Phone calls and written correspondence with an assigned ‘CCRS coach’ throughout the year as needed

All applying standard adult diploma programs will also need to submit a CCRS application and go through CCRS cohort training prior to launch. Rationale: Standards training and implementation is a challenging and essential component to diploma training.
