Introduction This unit will give background on the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The mission of NAEYC is "to promote high-quality, developmentally appropriate programs for all children and their families" (Bredekamp & Copple). We'll explore their recommendations for early learning programs. The NAEYC provides information on developmentally appropriate practices, a Code of Ethical Conduct, and best practices in any classroom environment.

Learning Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: Describe NAEYC and how it benefits early learning programs Discuss the key principles of developmentally appropriate practices Explain the importance of the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct.

Ethics Guide professionals in respectfully and sensitively handling ethical dilemmas and conflicting situations. Ethical dilemmas are complex situations that are not solved by research or law and for which there is more than one course of action, with potentially negative impact on one party.

Unit 6 Project Please take ten minutes and go to the Unit 6 Project Icon in the course. Read the directions and come back with one question. Please look over the rubric and the template in class as your guide. Who are you writing this parental involvement plan for? Who is your audience? 15

Unit 6 Project Parent Involvement Plan Imagine you are working with one- and two-year- olds in a child care center. The majority of the children have special needs and receive early intervention. Many of the children’s parents work two jobs and have a difficult time participating in the center's activities. Whenever the center plans an event, the parental involvement is lower than desired. The center has tried to increase parental involvement – through such methods as calling to remind parents and sending home notices – but is not having any luck. What is the issue here?

Unit 6 Project : What do we know so far? Your assignment is to create a Parental Involvement Plan to encourage better participation from parents (Your audience: Staff and director...not parents). Step 1: Identify the issue. (Lack of parental involvement) Step 2: Discuss your beliefs about the situation. What are the reasons why your parents are not participating? Why do you think what you do? Do you have research to support your opinion? No, what about a short trip to the KU Library?

More on Unit 6 Project: Step 3: Formulate conclusions and offer suggestions to the director of the child care center. (Note this is not the same as the actual plan in step 4). Step 4: Create a Parent Involvement Plan for the teachers to use and refer to often (You should include communication efforts and a planned event with details). I will accept the plan in a bulleted format or in paragraph form or in a table. The choice is up to you.

Include a planned event (add details) in Step Four: Parent Coffees (morning/ evening) where discussions can address specific issues or general concerns of parents. Parent Day where parents are welcome to spend all or part of a day in the classroom. Parent Volunteer Program where parents are utilized as classroom volunteers. Parent Visiting List where parents can sign up to visit the classroom at times convenient to their personal schedules. (Eradakos, 2011, Slide 5). In text citation

Unit 6 Project Rubric Maximum 100 Points 90 Points You created a Parent Involvement Plan in response to the scenario listed in the instructions. Your plan included the following steps: Step 1: Identify the issue. Step 2: Discuss your beliefs about the situation. Step 3: Formulate conclusions and offer suggestions to the director of the child care center. Step 4: Create a Parent Involvement Plan for the teachers to use and refer to often. 10 points Each section of your paper meets or surpasses minimum requirements for length, follows required format and contains no spelling or grammatical errors. It contains a separate title page, properly formatted, a separate reference page and was typed using a 12 point font (Ariel or Times New Roman).
