The Faculty of Medicine Name, title of the presentation

Knowledge, skills and attitudes for improved health english english

Our close integration with St. Olav’s University Hospital provides us with a unique, highly integrated research and teaching environment. Begun in 2002, the new university hospital will continue to take shape until 2014 on “Øya”. The Faculty owns some 70,500 m2 on the Øya campus. (Dragvoll campus 80,000 m2/Gløshaugen, 62,000 m2) University hospital

The Faculty of Medicine has five departments: Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine Laboratory Medicine, Children's and Women's Health Neuroscience Public Health and General Practice Circulation and Medical Imaging Faculty of medicine

Studies The Faculty of Medicine offers several programmes of study for international degree students. Some of these are international MSc and PhD programmes taught in English, while others require skills in Norwegian language. In addidion there are courses open for exchange students. In the academic year 2008/2009 there are about 250 master's degree students, 700 medical students and more than 1500 attending other courses and degree programmes. Nobel Laureate Dr. Watsons visited the Faculty of Medicine, June 2008

In 2008, the Faculty awarded 49 doctorates, compared with 34 in 2007 Doctorates in 2008

Research The Faculty’s three strategic areas of special effort are: Medical technology Translation research Health surveys/biobanks

Medical technology The Faculty focuses particularly on medical technology, which is also one of NTNU’s Strategic Areas. For more information, see: MI Lab The overall goal of MI Lab is to facilitate cost efficient health care and improved patient outcome through innovation in medical imaging, and to exploit the innovations to create industrial enterprise in Norway. Research

Health surveys/biobanks An important area of special effort is health surveys and biobanks, primarily via the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT) HUNT is one of the largest and most comprehensive population-based health surveys ever performed. HUNT is a unique databank of personal and family medical histories, clinical measurements, exposure variables and biological material collected in three studies from For more information, see: Research

Translation research The Faculty of Medicine is closely integrated with Trondheim University Hospital -St. Olav’s Hospital. This is a good basis for research translating new knowledge from basic science and new technology into new clinical practice.Trondheim University Hospital The Pain and Palliation Research Group Focuses on pain and other symptoms that trouble cancer patients. Their research will make a contribution to improved treatment of terminal cancer patients, better understanding of the influence of genetic makeup on our experience of pain and the effects of pain-relief treatments. The research is being carried out in close collaboration with a number of international partners and funded in part by the EU’s 6th Framework Programme. Research

The scientific goal of the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience is to advance our understanding of neural circuits and systems. By focusing on spatial representation and memory, the investigators hope to uncover general principles of neural network computation in the mammalian cortex. The Kavli Institute coexists with the Centre for the Biology of Memory (CBM) but the scope of the Institute is broader and more long-term. CBM is part of the Centre of Excellence scheme of the Norwegian Research Council. For more information, see: Research
