Chapter 1: Illinois Driver’s License
Age Restrictions You must be at least age 18 to obtain an Illinois driver’s license. The following exceptions apply: If you are 16 or 17 years old and have successfully completed a state-approved driver education course
Age Restrictions In order to pass a state-approved driver education class a student must successfully complete the following Pass written, vision and driving exams Pass classroom and behind the wheel driving in state-approved driver education program Complete 50 hours of practice driving Parent needs to accompany student when getting license
Age Restrictions 50 hours of driving must be completed Parent Legal Guardian Responsible adult 21 years of age, had driver’s license for one year and approved by parents
Additional Requirements Drivers are required to carry your driver’s license or permit with you when you drive
Exemptions You may drive in Illinois without a valid driver’s license under the following circumstances Moved to Illinois from another state (90 days) Visiting Illinois from another state and own a driver’s license from that state Out-of-state student and have a driver’s license from that state Active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces and have a valid drivers license in your home state

Changing Your Name/Address Change Name A person has 30 days to legally change your name Address Change A person has 10 days to change your address These changes can be done at your local driver’s services facility
Document/Identification Requirements To receive an Illinois driver’s license/ID card you must provide acceptable forms of identification to prove the following: Legal Name Date of Birth Social Security number Residency Signature

Document/Identification Requirements In addition to the identification requirements, students will provide: Current White Slip 50 hours driving sheet completed Completed road test
Driver’s License Classifications Drivers seeking a basic license to operate a car in Illinois are issued a Class D license Class D Any motor vehicle weighing 16,000 pounds or less
Driver’s License Renewal 90 days before your driver’s license expires, you should receive a renewal notice from the Secretary of States Office
