SHORT ESSAYS (2/ 3 or 20 points = 40 points) Describe and evaluate changes in the political status of women in Latin America. What factors explain the decline of revolutionary fervor in Latin America? Compare the political, economic, and cultural resources of Latino communities in Florida, New York, and California. What have been the most important consequences for Latin America of the “war on drugs”?

LONG ESSAY (1/3or 4 = 30 points) It has often been said that Latin American culture cannot support political democracy. Evaluate this statement on the basis of evidence presented in this course. Describe the evolution of key economic policies in Latin America from the late nineteenth century to the present. Are you optimistic about the region’s economic future? Analyze the role of Catholicism in Latin American society. Has it varied over time and place? Think up a question that captures a central theme of the course; explain its significance; then write an answer.
