Tues 4-12 Aim: How can you choose your inspirational portrait and stylize your portrait to reflect that of Shepard Fairey, or Swoon’s artwork? Do Now: Define positive and negative space and explain its importance in printmaking

Wed 4-13 Aim: How can you continue your portrait drawing? Do Now: Define symmetrical balance and explain how it is used in printmaking

+ What is printmaking? Print: An original artwork that is reproduced multiple times from a surface bearing an image. The image on the surface is transferred to paper using a medium such as printing ink.

What types of printmaking are there? Intaglio: Usually involves metal plate/acid. Ink is rubbed onto a plate and wiped away so ink only stays in grooves of plate. Under pressure of a press, the ink is forced out of the plate and onto the paper. Lithography: Areas of stone or metal plates are treated so ink will be retained by certain areas. Relief: Woodcut/linoleum: image is cut away from the block, the remaining surface is inked and pressed onto paper Screen printing: Ink is forced through a screen and onto paper by a squeegee.

+ What is a monotype? A combination of painting and printing; one of a kind- only one print is made. Most of the ink is removed during the pressing, thus the image cannot be repeated. Sometimes there is enough ink left for a ghost print.

+ Texture and Line Printmaking is an excellent way to experiment with different textures for backgrounds and different line quality. Depending on the printing method you use, different textures and line qualities will be achieved. Always think about how you can manipulate materials to achieve different texture and line.

Thurs 4-14 Aim: How can you begin to transfer your drawing to the lino block? Do Now: Explain why carving is necessary to this form of printmaking, and recall other kinds of printmaking that carving is used in.

Do Now: Define pattern and motif, create one for your project. Friday 4-15 Aim How can you create a design using line for the back of your lino block? HW: due WED
