Change – as NEVER Before 51% of the work force will be under 34 by 2021 Virtually everything is changing – including hiring Even safe industries aren’t safe from change taxi (Uber) – hotels (AirBnB) In many respects, Baby Boomers have been the brakes to change that young people envision. Those “brakes” are retiring at 10,000/day. Hold on – this is going to be exciting. On average, young employees stay at a job less than 2.3 years. US Bureau of Labor Statistics. We can’t stop change, but we can change how we react to it.

3 Steps to Make Hiring Your Competitive Advantage 1. Hiring – NEW strategic pre-hire tools to move from Job Fit to Culture Fit Culture Fit = job fit + team fit + manager fit Job descriptions & interview evaluation forms provide only the most basic information. They need to be far more strategic. For example: Open Branch Managers positions in Toledo and Orlando. Same job description, but vastly different positions because of labor market, competition, size, etc. What are the manager’s strategic thoughts (in writing & signed) about the open position in their area? Hiring Statement – do your hiring managers know the general characteristics new employees need to help you fulfill your Mission Statement? Do you have a written paper trail with signatures for each hiring decisions that can be reviewed to improve your hiring process or manager?

3.On-boarding Must be a top priority throughout the organization. New employees have to “learn the ropes”…will that be from your top performer or your poor performer? Must be more than a hour lecture about policies & procedures. Give them a sense of the “big picture.” How is their job important? Young employees are saying: “Validate me as a person or loss me as an employee.” Listen, follow up and give messages of encouragement 3 Steps to Make Hiring Your Competitive Advantage (con’t)
