Literacy Spotlight: LISTENING How can we help students to be better listeners? How can we support students in making effective notes as they listen?

The British Empire was the biggest empire ever The British Empire was evil and racist The Empire’s sins tend to be better remembered than its achievements Half the people in the world lived in the British Empire The USA made the modern world Britain was the world’s superpower for two centuries Britain controlled a quarter of the world’s land surface Britain made the modern world British traders united the world Britain spread democracy (voting to choose your leader) More people speak Chinese than English The Roman Empire was bigger than the British Empire British ideas on law and government were spread Britain ruled the waves of all the world’s oceans Britain controlled ¾ of the world’s land surface The British Empire changed very little Britain controlled a quarter of the world’s population The Empire spread Islam around the world British migration changed the face of whole continents The Empire did more bad than good British traders only made money for themselves The empire spread Christianity around the world Encouraging careful listening whilst watching a clip Ask students to tick the boxes which contain arguments or ideas that they hear from the clip There are red herrings so they need to listen carefully
