Presentation transcript:

Election of 1876, Compromise of 1877 By: Jiahao Huang & Alec Peterson

Rutherford B. Hayes ► Governor of Ohio ► Reputation for honesty ► Republican ► Held moderate views on Reconstruction

Samuel Tilden ► Gained national fame ► Fought political corruption in New York ► Democrat

Election Race ► Tilden received 250,000 more votes than Hayes ► However disputed returns from Florida, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Oregon representing 20 electoral votes kept the outcome in doubt.

Election Race (continued) ► Tilden had 184 electoral votes, only one short of what he needed to win. ► If Hayes received all of the 20 disputed electoral votes he would have the 185 electoral votes required for victory

Compromise of 1877 ► Democrats agreed to allow Hayes become president ► This was in agreement that all Federal troops in the south would withdraw ► Hayes was sworn in as president and ordered the withdrawal of all southern troops
