Analysis of Art and Film Part One Making meaning from imagery

“How can kids think amid all that buzz? Read the article silently. Take notes on the following as you read. Write this in your spiral notebook: –What are her central points? Record AT LEAST three. –What evidence does she provide to support each of these ideas? –What is the tone of this essay? Use a quote to support your response. –Where is her word choice distinctive? Find at least three phrases and write them down in your notes.

What are your capabilities? Is Ms. Kersten right? Does she make valid points, or is she off base? Why or why not? Why does it matter than you “get” books or movies? Why is analysis important in general?

How well can you analyze something that is removed from your immediate cultural experience?

How does imagery affect meaning?

Visual Cues Use of color Exaggeration of anything Use of shadow Lighting Expressions Movement and gestures- body language Symbolic objects Interative elements such as music or sound when present

How can knowledge of historical context influence your interpretation?

Casablanca We will NOT be watching Casablanca as passive viewers looking only to be entertained. We will be “reading” the film as we watch. Looking carefully at the details, examining the history, and analyzing what makes this film a “classic”.

Warning I expect your research essay to be carefully edited. I will be upping the stakes on grammar this time around. I will take off a point for every fragment, run-on, spelling error, and agreement error. Many of the mistakes you are making are due to carelessness!
