Bell Work In your opinion, which is more important for success in high school and life – your intelligence, your social/economic status, or your “grit”? Write a short answer to the question (3-5 sentences) that includes your supporting logic. Use complete sentences, with your name and period written at the top.

Grit, Success and You What is “Grit”? What are some words you associate with “grit”? Come up with three. Who do you know that is a role model for “Grit”? How “Gritty” are you? Are you “Gritty or Quitty”? We are going to find out by taking a Grit Assessment. But first, let’s watch a short “Ted Talks” video on Grit and Resilience. A Grit Word Cloud resilience tough

10 Must-Haves for Greater Grit Recent “Grit” studies interviewed people - including U.S. Special Forces soldiers and catastrophe victims - who coped well with a variety of incredibly stressful life experiences. The studies identified 10 factors that allow the most resilient among us to keep going despite incredibly trying times. They are:

10 Must-Haves for Greater Grit 1.Facing fears and challenges (no quitting). 2.Having a moral compass (character). 3.Drawing on faith (values and beliefs). 4.Using social support (friends, family). 5.Having good role models to emulate.

10 Must-Haves for Greater Grit 6. Being physically fit. 7. Making sure your brain is challenged. 8. Having "mental and emotional flexibility." 9. Having "meaning, purpose, and growth" in your life. 10. "Realistic" optimism.

Do you have True Grit? Do you give up too often? Do you have purpose and direction in your life? Have you found good role models? How about your character and values? Do you have the self-control to focus on what is important for your future…and resist what is not? Can you persevere when things get REALLY tough? Can you find the opportunity in failure, or in a problem? And most importantly, can you do this day after day, month after month….for the long haul?

Reality Check Everybody does NOT win in real life. Everybody does NOT get a trophy. In America, EVERYONE has the opportunity to succeed greatly, but NO ONE is entitled to success. Those that succeed have a goal, and work hard…for the long haul. You will never succeed in the big things in life, if you struggle now with the small. There are NO SECRETS. It just takes hard WORK and GRIT! It all starts in school. School is simply “life on training wheels”. Find your GRIT! Just Do It! Every Day!
