What is Program Achieve? You Can Do It! What is Program Achieve?

Social-emotional well-being The “Big Picture” YCDI advocates that social and emotional development programs not be bolted onto the academic agenda. It seeks to have schools cross the line that separates academic and social and emotional outcomes on the radar. Social-emotional well-being achievement What are the characteristics of high achievers and under-achievers?

The Barrier Model (mind-sets) The 5 Blockers Feeling very angry – misbehaving Not paying attention – disturbing others Procrastination Feeling very worried Feeling very down Negative Habits of Mind Social irresponsibility Being intolerant of limit Acting without thinking Being intolerant of others Planning time poorly Having no goals Giving up I can’t be bothered I can’t do it Needing approval Needing to be perfect Self-downing Positive Habits of Mind Social responsibility (values of character) Playing by the rules Thinking first Being tolerant of others Planning my time Setting goals Giving effort Working tough I can do it Being independent Taking risks Accepting myself The 5 Foundations Getting Along Organisation Persistence Confidence Resilience

Underlying Theories and Models The 12 negative and positive habits of mind are derived from: Ellis’ core set of rational and irrational beliefs Attributional theory Locus of control Learned helplessness and optimism Self-efficacy Goal-setting (also: mastery vs. performance, process vs. product) Internal motivation Interpersonal cognitive problem solving

Program Achieve Curriculum Ready, Set, You Can Do It! Confidence Persistence Organisation Getting Along Resilience Tips for using: Lesson length: 30-90 mins Stay fairly close to lesson plan Schedule weekly lesson time Don’t force all teachers to teach Program Achieve Schedule meetings to discuss Modify to suit learning styles Re-enforce the attitudes and competencies outside of lessons Integrate and embed Program Achieve within classroom and school culture and practice
