Deflategate Tom Brady and the New England Patriots deal with controversy Andrew Quinn Jr
What Happened After beating the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the AFC Championship Game, the New England Patriots were excited about going to the Super Bowl for the eighth time in the team’s history—the sixth since Tom Brady has been the team’s quarterback.
What Happened However, before the team could begin preparing for its Super Bowl in earnest, the Patriots found themselves embroiled in a cheating scandal. National Football League officials found the footballs the team used in the first half against the Colts were under-inflated. The kerfuffle has become known as Deflategate.
Accusations The Colts accused the Patriots of using balls that had a lower PSI (pounds per square inch) ratio than allowed by the NFL. When measured, they were 1.5 to 2 PSI's low. It doesn’t seem as if under-inflated footballs would make a big difference in the game, but experts say (in the perfectionist world of the NFL) it actually does. If a ball is under-inflated, it’s easier to grip and throw. NFL rules state that all footballs have to be inflated to at least 12.5 pounds of air per square inch. Anything less is, by rule, illegal.
Expirement After these accusations, the patriots' head coach, Bill Belichick, conducted an experiment with the team in which they simulated a full game day situation. The results The results concluded that once the footballs were taken outside into the cold, frigid New England air, followed by being handled by the team members, the PSI lowered 1.5. Scientific side of things Many scientists said that these results are factual and completely possible. The cold air along with being handled is known to lower the pressure within the balls.
Wells Report The Wells report (Wells is the lawyer that was hired for this case) found no proof that Brady had a role in the deflation of the footballs. It even stated that it was only "probable" that Brady was aware of what they claim was going on.
38 Point game There was no reason for the Patriots to purposefully deflate the balls. Also, a flat ball does not make a team lose by 38 points. The final score was 45-7.
The Punishment The patriots have been fined $1 million and have been forced for forfeit their first-round draft pick in 2016 and fourth-round draft pick the following year. Also, Brady was suspended from the first 4 games of the 2015 NFL season, which was upheld by a New York judge and now tom brady will get to play this whole season. This wont be settled until next season
