SE 2143-R Roundtable in Autodesk® Revit® Structure 2014 Nick Hugley Production Manager – McComas Engineering Inc
Autodesk Revit Structure software is not arcs, lines, and circles—it is pieces, parts, and information! How do you work in Revit Structure? I know how I work in Revit Structure, and I'm going to share this with you. Class summary
At the end of this class, we will have discussed: Edit linked model visibilities to your advantage Employ techniques to help your content Documenting the model Key objectives
We’re all in this together! I’ll lead the way! (at least for this hour) I really like this as a roundtable!
ref·or·ma·tion Synonyms: noun: reform, amendment, improvement, reclamation The action or process of reforming an institution or practice That’s pretty much what we’re all doing Conformation Again me and you RTC 2013 Keynote Speaker – Lee Crockett Unaware Unable Unwilling Why am I doing this Roundtable?
Most of the time not working in a BIM Environment Model for the BIM It’s coming more and more While I’m solving for the BIM Constant eye on the documents Use the 3D What is the End Result
First, all the typical stuff to start modeling But I want to take a closer look to see where they are in the modeling? Fast forward to what I'm looking for when I'm thinking about document views. Keep trolling Become intimate with the Link Display Settings, Basics tab What am I looking for in the Architectural model?

Let’s go “Roundtable” Do you think about who is going to use the views you create in your model? What specifically do you look at in the architectural model? First, second……. Are you using filters a lot, some or only when I have to? I have filters and never use them! Your Turn
Learn your content! Whether it's OOTB or custom. This is another topic I can't stress enough about. Look at ALL the OOTB content Custom content Schedules Simple to more complete Become intimate with the schedule parameters Content is King!
The biggest obstacle I face in custom content is getting the content exposed to everyone I've tried a lot of different ways to propagate content information Example PDFs\C-Channel Flat MEI.pdf Example PDFs\C-Channel Flat MEI.pdf Example PDFs\TYP ANNOTATIONS.jpg Example PDFs\TYP ANNOTATIONS.jpg Content is King!
Let’s go “Roundtable” How are you propagating family information? Schedules Do you have them all covered? Making them on fly? Can you? Your Turn
Steel, concrete, CMU, wood and cold formed steel (CFS) I do them all and there is a love hate relationship with each, both for modeling and documenting. The Different Construction Types
Revit's gotten better Too many pieces! Always wresting with LOD Leads to - Bad BIM Proprietary design Trusses CFS Headers Holdowns, straps etc…….. Detailed wall schedule! Wood and CFS
Something about foundations Mostly OOTB Not much elevated concrete NO 3d reinforcing 2d Content Precast hollow core slabs Again, proprietary LOD When making content! Get more with subtraction Concrete
Again one of my favorites Enough OOTB content Most custom content Unfriendly OOTB families Secondary framing LOD is going UP Better/faster modeling Secondary framing 3 rd party add on Steel
Don't be afraid to annotate different in Revit than you did using AutoCAD Move ON! I have a lot of different tags for different situations Again, content is king How am I going to call this out. Coarse, medium or fine Parameters populating schedules and tags PUT 3d views in your construction documents! Start using displaced views Documenting is Always Challenging
Wood and CFS Concrete Steel Documenting is challenging Your Turn – Let’s go Roundtable

My current favorite technology (has been for awhile) Music No Wifi needed! More and more gadgets coming out Update your car stereo for hands free, Safety First Enough Work! Closing Thought Totally Off Topic - Bluetooth
