Ionic Bonds PSSA: A/S8.C.1.1

Objective: TLW explain what ionic bonds are and predict the ratio of atoms that participate in simple ionic bonds.

MI #1: What are ions? Ions are charged particles that form when atoms gain or lose electrons. Ions are charged particles that form when atoms gain or lose electrons. Ionic bonds are formed when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, creating both positive and negative ions. Ionic bonds are formed when electrons are transferred from one atom to another, creating both positive and negative ions.

MI #2: Positive and Negative Ions Positive ions form from metals (left side of PT) because when they lose electrons they have more + charges than – charges). Negative ions form from nonmetals (right side of PT) because when they gain electrons they have more – charges than + charges.

MI #3: Formulas for Ionic Compounds To find the formula for an ionic compound… Determine the number of valence electrons and ionic charge for both elements Determine the number of valence electrons and ionic charge for both elements Determine the minimum number of atoms of each element required to form a compound with a neutral charge. Determine the minimum number of atoms of each element required to form a compound with a neutral charge. Example… Example… Na 1+ + O 2- = Na 2 O Na 1+ + O 2- = Na 2 O

So What…? Real Life Application Understanding ionic bonds allows us to understand how certain compounds form and why some elements are so reactive.
