RESEARCHING – APA Style I am NOT looking for a title page, your first page should have: Your Name Mrs. Noble Friday June 7, 2013 Law 12 Use Times New Roman – 12 point font – 1 inch margins.

What do I Have to Reference in Order to Avoid Plagiarism? Quotations, Paraphrases, Summaries Facts Others Ideas or Opinions (Procter, Margaret. "How Not to Plagiarize." Writing at the University of Toronto. N.p., n.d. Web. 24 Oct sources/how-not-to-plagiarize.) sources/how-not-to-plagiarize

HOW DO I CITE MY SOURCES?? In-Text Citations, Footnotes, & References

Step 1: In-Text Citation As you are writing, anytime you quote, paraphrase, summarize, give a fact, or state an idea that is not original to you, you must give an in-text citation or footnote which refers to the work that that idea came from. (Author, date) Source of examples on following slide: Purdue OWL: APA Formatting and Style Guide. (n.d.). Welcome to the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL). Retrieved October 25, 2012, from

According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199). According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners. APA style is a difficult citation format for first time learners (Jones, 1998). In-Text Citation Examples Notice where the periods are!

Footnotes Use Insert – Reference – Footnote in MS Word. Footnotes are formatted just as in-text citations but with no brackets.

Step 2: Reference Page All texts that are cited in your paper, must appear in the reference page at the end of your paper (and vice versa) Your reference page is:  A new page on its own  At the end of your paper  Double-spaced  Titled References  Formatted carefully Your reference page does not use any large font, bold text, or underlining – plain Jane!

Things to Notice References APA Citation Style | Cornell University Library. (n.d.). Home /Cornell University Library. Retrieved October 25, 2012, from Ruecker, T. (2010, July 1). Using APA Style. Academics Portal Index > Home. Retrieved October 25, 2012, from Nothing fancy about the title Everything is double-spaces, no extra space. There is a hanging indent on all lines after the first entry. The entries appear in alphabetical order.

HOW DO I MAKE A REFERENCE PAGE? Using

1. Select the type of source you are using (example: book, website) 2. For a book, try putting in the ISBN # before you type in all the information. 3. For a website, paste in the URL (click “Load Info”)  Look for and ADD the author’s name if it is given on the website 4. Click “Add to Bibliography” 5. Look at the top right corner, click APA 6. Paste into your word document, then adjust the font, line spacing and hanging indents.

TRY IT! If you are going through this Power Point on your own, try creating the reference for Mrs. Noble’s website. Does your reference look like this? Noble, M. (n.d.). Mrs. Noble's Webpage. HRSBSTAFF Home Page. Retrieved October 25, 2012, from If not, check that you remembered to add the author’s name and to click APA at the top right before copying the text.

Helpful Hint! If you make your references as you go, you won’t have to go back and do it later AND the date will already be done for you!

Happy Sourcing!
