Poetry To find the absolute location Of any given place There are some steps you’ll need to know To help you, just in case. Latitude will always come first Its lines go round and round It will always measure distances of Degrees of north and south. To determine the latitude coordinate Find the equator on your map Then ask yourself if you’re located to The north or to the south. Next you’ll find the latitude line That is closest to your point Move your finger to the sides of the map And ESTIMATE, APPROXIMATE, where you’re located at! Longitude will surely come next Its lines go up and down It will always measure the distances of Degrees of east and west. To determine the longitude coordinate First find the Prime Meridian Ask yourself: Is it located at zero degrees? And if it is, is it east or is it west? Next you’ll find the longitude line That is closest to your point Move your finger to the bottom or top of the map And ESTIMATE, APPROXIMATE, where you’re located at! -Joshlyn Velasco

Lesson Plan Scavenger Hunt 25 min Learning Objective(s): 1-5, 1-6 Individual Inquiry: Review the reading “Understanding Latitude and Longitude” or “Understanding Globes.” Advise students that they are going on an absolute location scavenger hunt. Give students a list of places and absolute locations to find on a globe or a map. Have students complete the absolute location scavenger hunt by identifying the absolute location of a given city. Have students locate a city based on its latitude and longitude. Ask students to label the locations they identified on their map. (See Model Lesson and Sample Student Work.) Resources History, “Understanding Globes,” pp. FL42–FL43 Time, “Understanding Latitude and Longitude,” p. GH5 Absolute Loaction Scavenger Hunt Activity Sheet, p. 23 Latitude and Longitude Map Match Game latitude-longitude-map-game.php Adaptations and Notes Technology: Hold a class competition using the “Latitude and Longitude Map Match Game.”

Activity Journey Map Have students create a journey map, like the ones used by travelers long ago. These maps were crudely made and read from the starting point up. Have the students pick a location that will be familiar to their classmates then make a journey map, using relative locations for their classmates to figure out. It can be from their house to the school or from their house to the store, for example. They must create it using their memories and marking distances and locations in relative terms. Have them trade with classmates when their maps are complete and give them the homework assignment of trying to follow one another's map. Have classmates critique one another's maps and make notes of what was missing or anything grossly misrepresented in terms of landmarks. Talk about how a map with absolute locations would have made the journey much easier.
