FRANK MACFARLANE BURNET By Taylah

Personal Profile Born: 3 September 1899, in Traralgon, Victoria Died: 31 August 1985 Parents: Frank Burnet, Hadassah Burnet Frank Macfarlane Burnet is known for Acquired immune tolerance.

(Your Scientist’s) Work Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet, usually known as Macfarlane or Mac Burnet, was an Australian virologist best known for his contributions to immunology. His first bench work began with diagnostic bacteriology and serology. Even at this early stage he was an acute observer. Starting with practical problems, he used opportunities generated by any unexpected results to expand his intellectual horizons and to seek generalisations. This pattern, repeated over a lifetime, ultimately created the foundations for our current understanding of the immune system.

Other Facts In 1960, he was awarded the 1960 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for demonstrating acquired immune tolerance. Died in Port Fairy, Victoria. Burnet was the most highly decorated and honoured scientist to have worked in Australia After a series of increasing health problems in his final years, Burnet died of cancer.
