Portraits of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I Learning Objectives: To understand why portraits were painted To decide what image Henry and Elizabeth wanted to show To decide how successful they were at controlling what people thought of them

What do we know so far? What words would you use to describe Henry VIII? What words would you use to describe Elizabeth I?

Why did monarchs have their portraits painted? They wanted to look better than they did in real life They wanted to celebrate important occasions such as winning a war Television and newspapers did not exist so people around the country would not know what they looked like. Some portraits were painted as gifts from their friends and admirers.

What can we learn from a portrait? What are the differences between these two portraits of our current Queen?
