WHAT’S YOUR RESEARCH QUESTION/ THESIS? RESEARCH QUESTION : WHAT’S MARTIN LUTHER KING’S IMPACT ON SOCIETY’S ISSUES? THESIS: MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. IMPACTED SOCIETY’S ISSUES IN NUMEROUS WAYS.

BACKGROUND INFO KING WAS BORN ON JANUARY 15 TH, 1929 IN ATLANTA,GA DEDICATED MAJORITY OF HIS LIFE TO CIVIL RIGHTS. DIES ON APRIL 4 TH, 1968 IN MEMPHIS,TN DUE TO BEING ASSASSINATED BY JAMES EARL RAY ON HIS MOTEL BALCONY.

START OF THE JOURNEY DECEMBER 1 ST, 1955, KING PROTESTED MONTGOMERY'S BUS SYSTEM WHEN ROSA PARKS, 42 YEAR OLD AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN MEMBER OF THE NAACP, WAS ARRESTED. KING WAS PART OF THE MONTGOMERY IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION AND WAS ELECTED LEADER. MONTGOMERY IMPROVEMENT ASSOC. – SECRET GROUP MADE UP OF AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO PROTESTED AGAINST THE UNFAIR LAW OF RACIAL SEGREGATION.

START OF THE JOURNEY (CON.) AFRICAN AMERICANS AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS FORMED A BOYCOTT AGAINST THE BUS SYSTEM DUE TO KING’S URGING. BOYCOTT HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE BUS SYSTEM IN MONTGOMERY. LED TO BOYCOTT BEING A SUCCESS SINCE U.S. SUPREME COURT RULED SEGREGATION ON PUBLIC BUSES WAS UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (SCLC) IN 1957, KING AND BLACK MINISTERS FORMED THE SCLC GOAL OF SCLC: STOP RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN A NON VIOLENT WAY PURPOSE OF SCLC: ORGANIZE ACTION OF LOCAL PROTESTS IN SOUTH BUT LEANED ON BLACK CHURCHES FOR SUPPORT.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON IN 1963, KING AND ANOTHER PERSON LED THE MARCH ACROSS WASHINGTON MORE THAN 200,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART IN THE ACTION KING GAVE “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH AT LINCOLN MEMORIAL WHY DID KING CHOOSE THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL?

MARCH ON WASHINGTON (CON.) MARCH WAS A SUCCESS SINCE IT PUSHED THE ADMINISTRATION OF JOHN F. KENNEDY TO GET THE FEDERAL CIVIL RIGHTS BILL PASSED. SPEECH GIVEN REVEALED AMERICA’S “PRIVATE GRIEF” OF RACISM AND IGNORANCE. PURPOSE OF SPEECH WAS TO HIGHLIGHT THE ISSUES OF AMERICA THAT NEED TO CHANGE TO MAKE AMERICA A BETTER NATION.

CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 ACT PROHIBITS DISCRIMINATION BASED ON INDIVIDUAL’S RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, SEX, OR NATIONAL ORIGIN. IMPACTED AFRICAN AMERICANS AND PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES WHO WERE MISTREATED BECAUSE OF THEIR CULTURE OR RACE. ACT ENDED SEGREGATION IN PUBLIC AREAS AND BANNED DISCRIMINATION IN WORKING PLACES

KING ADVOCATE ON POVERTY KING WAS A VOCAL ADVOCATE FOR PEOPLE LIVING IN POVERTY AND THE UNEMPLOYED. MARCH ON WASHINGTON WAS ALSO KNOWN AS THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM. KING NOT ONLY ADDRESSED EQUALITY BUT ADDRESSED THAT THERE SHOULD BE MINIMUM WAGE AND SELF- GOVERNMENT WHEN GIVING THE SPEECH. WANTED A POLICY THAT COULD HAVE A SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACT THAT COULD PROVIDE JOB ASSURANCE FOR PEOPLE WILLING TO WORK.

KING AND ECONOMIC/SOCIAL PROBLEMS IN SOCIETY KING MOVED INTO THE POOREST AREA OF CHICAGO TO GET A CLEARER PERSPECTIVE ON HOW POVERTY WAS. KING DEMANDED ECONOMIC AID FOR ALL POOR COMMUNITIES IN THE U.S. WHICH LATER WAS REFERRED TO AS THE ECONOMIC BILL OF RIGHTS FOCUSED ON A “BROAD SOCIAL CAMPAIGN” CALLED THE POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN

POOR PEOPLE’S CAMPAIGN SCLC AND KING BEHIND THE CAMPAIGN PURPOSE OF CAMPAIGN : ADDRESS PROBLEMS OF ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND HOUSING THE POOR. CAMPAIGN WANTED GOVERNMENT TO HAVE HELPING THE POOR AS A PRIORITY BY ENSURING AN ANTIPOVERTY PACKAGE THAT INCLUDED HOUSING AND ANNUAL INCOME

KING AND THE VIETNAM WAR KING NOTICED THE LARGE AMOUNT OF MONEY BEING SPENT ON THE VIETNAM WAR INSTEAD OF PEOPLE IN THE U.S. WHO ARE LIVING IN POVERTY IN NEED OF IT. KING OPPOSED THE WAR AND WANTED AN END FOR MONEY BEING SPENT ON VIOLENCE. WANTED “RADICAL REDISTRIBUTION OF ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POWER” SINCE POVERTY WAS A MAJOR PROBLEM IN U.S.

KING AND VIETNAM WAR (CON.) KING WANTED U.S. TO STOP FIGHTING VIETNAM AND MAKE A TRUCE WITH THE HOPES OF LEADING TO PEACE AND WITHDRAWAL OF TROOPS. OVERALL, WANTED PEACE NO WAR.

KING V. PRESIDENT LYNDON JOHNSON KING WAS A SUPPORTER OF PRESIDENT JOHNSON’S EFFORTS INVOLVING RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. JOHNSON CREATED THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT AND CAME UP WITH A CRITICAL CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION AS WELL AS ANTI- POVERTY PROGRAMS. GREAT SOCIETY : SET OF DOMESTIC PROGRAMS DUE TO U.S. INVOLVEMENT IN THE WAR, KING’S CONCERNS BECAME MORE PUBLIC AND ADDED MORE TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO AND LATER RESULTED IN THE RELATIONSHIP ENDING.

CONCLUSION: KING DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO HELP OTHERS AND PUT AN END TO THE RACIAL IGNORANCE AS WELL AS MAKE AMERICA A UNITED AND BETTER NATION TO BE A PART OF. KING EVOLVED THROUGHOUT DIFFERENT STAGES OF HIS LIFE AND THROUGH HIS EVOLUTION, GOOD THINGS CAME OUT OF IT.
