Integers Around Us Student Sample

Where do we see integers in action?

Adding Integers in the Real World The temperature was –5 degrees Fahrenheit at 7:00 am. It rose 20 degrees Fahrenheit by 2:00pm. What was the temperature at 2:00pm? -5º + 20º = 15º

Subtracting Integers in The Real World The football team gained 5 yards on their first play of the game. Then they lost 6 yards. What was the change in yardage? 5 yards – 6 yards= -1 yard

Multiplying Integers in Everyday Life Michael was a contestant on a game show. Every time he answered incorrectly he lost $ Michael lost three times. How much money did Michael lose? (3)(-$200.00) = -$600.00

Dividing Integers in The Real World -40 ÷ 5 = - 8 points per game The basketball team lost their last 5 games. They lost by a total of 40 points. What is the average number of points lost per game?

Adding Integers: The Rules If the signs are different, SUBTRACT and take the sign of the higher number If the signs are the same, ADD and keep the sign Examples : = = (-18) = 2 (-20) + (-18) = -38

Subtracting Integers: The Rules Keep the sign of the first number Change the subtraction sign to addition Change the sign of the second number Follow the rules for addition Examples: 15 – 5 = – (-5) = – 5 = – (-5) = -10

Multiplying and Dividing Integers: The Rules Are The SAME If the signs are the same, the answer is POSITIVE If the signs are different, the answer is NEGATIVE Examples: 12 ÷ 6 = 2 -6 × -2 = ÷ 6 = -2 6 × -2 = -12
