Discussion: Pre-Start Activities In this discussion…  Who? - The entire crew!  What? – Activities and Discussions to enhance our race results!  Where? – On the race course!  When? – 5 to 10ish minutes prior to start!  Why?

Lets talk Boat Basics! So this horse walks into the bar…

Boat Basics  Any new/replacement crew on board?  Are we rigged correctly?  Are we tuned correctly: Rig? Sails?  Is the radio on?  Is the start clock ready?  Is the helmsperson “on their feet”/mobile?

Lets talk start line! So this priest walks into the bar…

Start Line  Is “Check-in” required?  Any questions on the current Flags or Marks?  Can we identify a favored end?  How long is the line? (How big is the “favor”)

Favored End? Wind

Lets talk race conditions! So this penguin takes his car in…

Race Conditions  How close are the conditions to the previously acquired forecast?  Discuss forecast and confidence!  Oscillations?  Trend?  Wave or current considerations?

Josh, you ready on the clock? Right after I fill your Schlitz order, sir!

Pre-Start “Mash Up” Roll up all those topics, and then some (tactics, strategies)… … and see where the discussion leads!

The End! … aye, it’s driving me nuts!

Brian Torresen John Schumacher

You Make the Call How much breeze should be observed before the RC starts a race? 3k 5k 7k type of race? Experience level How much wind is too much wind? 15k20k25kPuffy, experience, type of race

You make the call You sail by the signal boat after the warning signal and before the start and observe that the signal boat has not flown the orange line flag. 1 keep on sailing and ignore the error 2 point out the error to the race committee 3 Be upset that the race committee postpones the start of the race while they install the line flag.
