© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 1 Use appropriate tools for network cabling and connections. Objective – 2%

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 2 Crimper  Network cables are stripped using wire strippers and then the wires are reordered and cut to the proper length to be inserted into a connector.  The crimper is used to bind the connector to the cable.  In the crimping process, metal “fingers” in the connector are punched down into the individual wires. Video on Using Crimpers

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 3 Multimeter  A multimeter can be used to test continuity in a network cable. Video on Using a Multimeter

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 4 Toner Probe  A tone generator and probe will allow you to trace the location of cables. Video on Using a Toner Probe

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 5 Cable Tester  A cable tester is used to test a network cable for proper wiring through all the wires. Video on Using a Cable Tester

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 6 Loopback Plug  A loopback plug is used for testing the network port on your computer. Video on Loopback Plugs

© ExplorNet’s Centers for Quality Teaching and Learning 7 Punch Down Tool  When you terminate cable in a box or at a patch panel for business networking solutions you will make the connections with a punch down tool. Video about Punch Down Tools
