Scheme of Redemption

Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet 2 of 25

Recap "Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as one book with the real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin 3 of 25

Recap Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Strife and tragedy were unheard of Adam did not lie awake at night stressing over how he was going to resolve a problem in his life or how he was going to survive. Genesis 3-12 – “The Background of Redemption” The true division of the Bible takes place at Genesis 3:6. Everything changed here 4 of 25

Recap Two main lines stem from Adam and Eve The righteous lineage of Seth The evil lineage of Cain Eventually these two lines intermingle by way of the marriage These leads to such disaster of: “Every intent of the thoughts of [man’s] heart was only evil continually” The earth was filled with violence. The earth was made corrupt 5 of 25

Recap God sets a “diving reboot” in motion He sets out on a plan to flood the whole earth with water To destroy all life on the earth, of both man and animals However, God would spare man and animals through a man named Noah Grace Loving kindness Justice 6 of 25

Recap God was with Noah and was very involved in the flood He closed the door of the ark The flood waters prevailed 15 cubits above the mountains, so 30-cubit high ark would never hit bottom – Precision Possible that the earth as we know it today was very different from what it is was in the beginning 7 of 25

The flood ends Genesis 8:1-5 - But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained; and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible. 8 of 25

Exiting the ark “But God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark” Remembered: From Hebrew word zakar Indicates a thoughtful mindfulness – not a recalling of something that was forgotten “Remember us in your prayers” God was with Noah, his family, and the animals during their voyage through the flood 9 of 25

Exiting the ark Genesis 8:15-10 – Then God spoke to Noah, saying, “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out by their families from the ark. 10 of 25

Exiting the ark Genesis 8:20-22 – Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The Lord smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done. “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night shall not cease.” 11 of 25

Post flood Genesis 8:21 – “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, for the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth” Does this mean that we’re born sinful/evil and therefore in a lost state at birth? No – Rather, this is a reflection of the post-sin (post Genesis 3:6) state of man’s heart Something changed with us in Genesis 3:6. Our “eyes were opened” (Gen 3:7). A propensity to sin Proverbs 22:15 – Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; The rod of discipline will remove it far from him. 12 of 25

Post flood Genesis 8:22 - “While the earth remains, Seedtime and harvest, And cold and heat, And summer and winter, And day and night Shall not cease.” Please, no politics!! Is it possible for man to render harm to the earth, to mankind, and to animal/plant life? God created an environment that can handle anything man or nature throws at it! Man will not destroy the earth. This is a capability that is reserved to God alone Be good stewards, but remember who is in control 13 of 25

Post flood Genesis 9: Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, “Now behold, I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 14 of 25

Post flood Genesis 9:12-15 – God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 15 of 25

Post flood 9:16-17 – “When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.” 16 of 25

The rainbow Take time to enjoy the sight of a rainbow!! It is a sign of a covenant that God made with man and animals (9:10, 15-17) As you look upon it, God is too! (9:16) It serves as a beautiful reminder to us of the promises of God, His grace, His mercy, and His faithfulness to all of mankind. 17 of 25

Antediluvian vegetarians?? Genesis 9:2-4 – “The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given. Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant. Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.” 18 of 25

Antediluvian vegetarians?? Genesis 2:15-17 – Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” 19 of 25

Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.” An odd thing for God to explain to Noah?? 20 of 25

Disaster strikes Genesis 9:20-24 – Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 21 of 25

Disaster strikes Why is this story here??? Our problem of sin still exists, and God MUST get to the cross To also give us insight into the new world of mankind and their relationship to redemption. The nations of Israel and Canaan will affect the rest of the story from here to the cross 22 of 25

Disaster strikes What happened?? Problem #1 – Noah got drunk Was it just that Ham walked into Noah’s tent and saw him naked? 23 of 25

Disaster strikes What happened?? Problem #1 – Noah got drunk Was it just that Ham walked into Noah’s tent and saw him naked? Noah “knew what [Ham] had done to him” Kirk’s opinion – Ham may have done something perverse in nature to Noah 25 of 25

Disaster strikes Noah curses Ham’s son, Canaan Genesis 9: “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers.” He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant. “May God enlarge Japheth, And let him dwell in the tents of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant.” 26 of 25

Remainder of Noah’s life Genesis 9:28-29 – Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died 27 of 25

Coming Up Genesis 3-12 – Continue on with studying the background of redemption Babel Intro to Abraham 28 of 25
