Topic / Objective & Essential Question Topic / Objective: 1) To use the Socratic Seminar activity to discuss and explore themes in Book One of Native Son. Essential Question: 1) What explains Bigger’s motivation in killing Mary? Topic / Objective: 1) To use the Socratic Seminar activity to discuss and explore themes in Book One of Native Son. Essential Question: 1) What explains Bigger’s motivation in killing Mary?

TODAY We are going to use the Socratic Seminar to explore central ideas and themes in the novel. Use the handout from yesterday to ask/answer questions and take notes.

Inner Ring is the “live” ring – only these students are talking Students in the Inner Ring have the following options: 1)Ask a question (your own question or the starter one). 2)Answer a question. * After each student has had an opportunity to speak, we will have an “open” session – any student can speak in the Inner Ring. Students in the Inner Ring have the following options: 1)Ask a question (your own question or the starter one). 2)Answer a question. * After each student has had an opportunity to speak, we will have an “open” session – any student can speak in the Inner Ring. Inner Ring Participant 1 Participant 2 Participant 3 Participant 4 Participant 5 Participant 6 Participant 7

Outer Ring is the Observer ring – these students are “listening” Students in the Observer Ring have the following options: 1)Listen to the discussion. 2)Write down a question you want answered. 3)Take notes on what is said in the “Inner Ring” After the Inner Ring has finished their discussion, the Outer Ring observers will take the seats of the Inner Ring. Outer Ring Observer 1 Observer 2 Observer 3 Observer 4 Observer 5 Observer 6 Observer 7

Socratic Seminar Rules 1)No talking over – the speaker has max 3 min of speaking time. 2)Ask a question or answer a question – avoid debate.

Socratic Seminar (Review) 1)After one round of Q&A, Inner Ring can have an “Open-Discussion”. 2)Outer Ring switches after 5- 7 min of discussion.

Starter Question (1) After killing the rat, Bigger says to himself “he knew that the moment he allowed what his life meant... He would either kill himself or someone else” (10). Given this statement and later violent moments (his fight with Gus), could we have predicted that Bigger would kill Mary?

Starter Question (2) When Bigger drives Mary to pick up Jan, at first he says “she responded to him as if he were human... He had never felt that before in a white person” (65). Later, however, he says “he felt toward Mary and Jan a dumb, cold, and inarticulate hate” (67). Q: What explains Bigger’s conflicting reactions, and how is this connected to the murder?

Starter Question (3) On pages 84-85, Wright describes how Bigger kisses Mary while she is unconscious. Most experts on sexual assault describe how this kind of crime is not really about sex at all, but rather about a man showing power over a woman. Q: In this scene, is Bigger “showing power” over Mary – if so, why would he do this?

Final Question (4) Q: What explains Bigger’s motivation in killing Mary? BEFORE YOU LEAVE, make sure that the top and bottom portions of your WS are completed and turned in!

Topic / Objective & Essential Question Topic / Objective: 1) To develop good discussion questions in preparation for the Socratic Seminar tomorrow.
