Comparing Mitosis and Meiosis (and gametogenesis) Biology 12
Mitosis vs Meiosis: Complete the worksheet
Gametogenesis: Gamete = A mature haploid male or female cell that is able to unite with another of the opposite sex in sexual reproduction (egg or sperm).
Spermatogenesis: Meiosis in males produces male gametes (sperm) In animals a flagellum forms from one of the centrioles
Oogenesis: Meiosis in females produces female gametes (eggs) After meiosis I, the division of cytoplasm is unequal The larger cell continues to meiosis II and the smaller cell (called a polar body) usually dies off After meiosis II, the division of cytoplasm is unequal again The larger cell matures into an egg (ova) and the smaller cell usually dies off again Original cell produces one egg and 3 polar bodies Diagram page 114
To do: Draw a diagram of spermatogenesis and oogenesis for your notes Assignment: Page 112 # 1, 2,3, 4 Page 124 # 1, 2, 9, 10, 11
