Gr C: Investigate into the energy contents of different foods. Gr B: Calculate the energy value of different foods. Gr A: Evaluate the method used. Food is Fuel Entrance ActivityKey Terms Energy (Joules) Calories Energy Value What do you think the scientific method ?

FOOD (Chemical Energy) Energy in nutrients Fats39kJ per g Protein20kJ per g Carbohydrates17kJ per g What does “kJ per g” mean?

Learning Activity Scientific Method Using the scientific method cut and paste sheet. Arrange the different parts of the scientific method in what you think is the correct order. Do not stick them in until you have check your arrangement. “Cut and Paste” The Scientific Method is a process used by scientists to study the world around them. It can also be used to test whether any statement is accurate. You can use the scientific method to study a leaf, a dog, an ocean, or the entire Universe.

Scientific Method Aim: What is it that you are going to do? The aim of this experiment is..... Introduction I want to find out.. I have decided to compare.. The question I want to ask.. 12 Safety: To make sure that the experiment is safe… The experiment is safe because… 3 Prediction I think that… because I predict that… because The results should show… because 4 Equipment Use bullet points for the materials you used in your experiment. The apparatus used were: · 5 Method Say what you are going to do. What equipment you will use and what measurements you will take? (Variables-fair test) 6 Results Write down what you found out. You should include any maths involved in finding your results. You could use a table or graph where this makes your results clearer. 7 Evaluation Were your readings accurate? Were the instruments and equipment you used accurate and reliable? Did you make any errors? 8 Conclusion Why do you think that you got these results? Are they what you had predicted in your prediction? 9

Demonstration of the “Energy in Food” practical.

Learning Activity Complete the following sections of the scientific investigation write up: Aim Prediction Variables Independent Variable (Factors you change) Dependent variable (Factors you measure) Controlled variables (Keeping the same) Fair test 15mins

Method Success Criteria GradeInstructionsHealth and SafetyAccuracy and Repeatability CInstruction are simplistic with limited amounts of detail. Method can be followed but there are opportunities for mistakes. Simplistic health and safety procedures but in place. Method has no checks or repeats to ensure accuracy or repeatability. BInstructions are clear, with good detail regarding amounts and measurements. Method can easily be followed. Risks in experiment are identified and dealt with. Method involves some check and includes the suggestion of doing a repeat. AInstructions are simplistic, yet, very detailed. There is little room for error. Instructions include measurements, equipment and justification of techniques. Ricks are identified with clear and detailed method of prevention or reduction of risk. Method involves several necessary checks and include repeats, with explanations of their relevance. Learning Activity
