Title: Creative Writing10/06/14 Page 19 Aim: How can we respond to Miss Julie through creative writing? Do Now: Based on the themes you came up with on Friday, what do you think about August Strindberg and his messages to the reading audience?

Themes in Miss Julie: Respond to one of these themes All men and women are mercurial creatures, sometimes acting impulsively in response to hereditary and environmental influences on them. The centuries-old barrier between the aristocracy and the common folk is beginning to collapse. A woman’s attempt to overcome the gender, cultural, and environmental forces acting upon her brings about her downfall.

Finish Group Work: You have till 2:05 Choose an activity from the following list Draw the ending to Miss Julie. Write a paragraph about why you included certain images in the drawing with color. (2 people) Come up with an alternate ending to the play. Re-write the ending and come up with an act (similar to Eveline assignment) (4-5 people) Create a poem about Miss Julie’s fate. Include a drawing with color (3 people) Write a 3-4 paragraph letter to the author August Strindberg about Miss Julie. What would you say to him? What are some issues you would address? (3-4 people) Spoken-word poem- write a spoken word poem about Miss Julie then perform it to the class (3 people)

Title: Critical Analysis10/08/14 Page 20 Aim: How can we analyze a critical analysis on Miss Julie? Do Now: In Strindberg’s preface of Miss Julie he says the following: I say Miss Julie is a modern character not because the man-hating half-woman has not always existed but because she has now been brought out into the open, has taken the stage, and is making a noise about herself. Victim of a superstition (one that has seized even stronger minds) that woman, that stunted form of human being, standing with man, the lord of creation, the creator of culture, is meant to be the equal of man or could ever possibly be, she involves herself in an absurd struggle with him in which she falls. Absurd because a stunted form, subject to the laws of propagation, will alway s be born stunted and can never catch up with the one who has the lead. As follows: A(the man) and B(the woman) start from the same point C, A with a speed of let us say 100 and B with a speed of 60. When will B overtake A? Answer: never. Respond to his comments. What do you think about him and his reason for making Miss Julie weak?

Activity Read Alice Templeton’s article “Miss Julie as “A Naturalistic Tragedy”” Annotate using rules provided to you: Main idea, vocabulary, and Agreement/disagreement

Title: Critical Analysis10/09/14 Page 20 continued What were some difficulties you had while annotating the article “Miss Julie as “A Naturalistic Tragedy””?

Title: Critical Analysis10/10/14 Page 21 Aim: How can we write our own critical analysis? Do Now: What is one argument/claim you can make about the play Miss Julie?

What is critical analysis? The goal of critical analysis is to enhance a person’s opinion on different subject fields. Whether it is about personal or general topics, it aims to make a person be heard. Through critical analysis, you can examine all the parts one by one first so that you can come up with a conclusion.critical analysis

Article The development of the plot in “Miss Julie” does not seem to have as much to do with heredity as environment. For example, Miss Julie is an aristocrat that is thumbing her nose at the social norms of her time (Templeton, 470).
