Gateway Conference 2016 Grant Scott, Director – Shed Boss Taranaki Building as a career as I see it!!!!!

Who is this builder? I like being practical.....building skills will set me up for life my path is Orange

Who is this builder? My Name is Grant Scott Live in NP…Born and bred Naki lad I have a family of boys One 14 at NPBHS, twins approaching 21 (1 x apprentice builder, 1 x apprentice chef) Married to Leisha also a tradie, owns her own florist shop Hobbies football, cooking, boating, skiing, camping, outdoors…..anything to do with building /property Schooling got out as soon as I was allowed. I had rules (Would have been gateway student if available)

Why Building? I attended a Polytech pre-trades course It provided me work experience at number of businesses (joinery/builders etc.) and gave me an insight to a wide range of trades I accepted an apprenticeship 3 months later My passion was and still is food However…… I have never regretted my building trade decision

I’m now a builder Mussel Tan Money Car Girls I was sold …….only my car was an old Ford!

Learning The Trade  Getting paid while I learnt was even better  My trade become part of me, I had to be building stuff!  I loved doing something that I was good at  I Qualified as # 2 trade cert carpenter of my year…a bit of a step up from my school results  In the last year of apprenticeship, I built 2 houses as foreman with labour and junior apprentices under my watch. A real sense of achievement

Expanding within The Trade At age 20, I was estimating and project managing small to medium jobs for Cleland’s gaining experience in housing, light commercial, alterations and jobbing Using my skills I then travelled and worked abroad With a broad building industry knowledge I was able to be adaptable and valued

My Business Apprenticeship  After returning to New Plymouth I set up business with my parents and brother.  My father is a second generation sheet metal tradie and my brother an industrial sparky.  I have spent many hours in a sheet metal workshop so it’s like a second trade to me also

My Business Apprenticeship  We used our combined trade back grounds and learnings to grow the business from 5 staff to 35 in just a few years.  We did this by diversifying ……..this meant employing more tradies…….plumbers, gas fitters, builders etc.  There was a tradie shortage  There is still a tradie shortage !!!

So back to building After 15 years as part of that business, it was time for me to do something on my own I choose to set up a building business with the bestest ex-wife ever The changes within our industry along with my passion for the industry is what drew me back in - Licenced Builders, new products and methods of building, health and safety, growth in the building sector nationally, getting back to my roots

The site had been cleared I had made a decision to do something building or building related I wanted to use what I had learnt in both my tradie and business apprenticeships pride in work, not to be afraid of giving it crack (confidence), importance of communication and team work, to never stop learning, importance of systems, being innovative,……….. I wanted a Steel building built……who was going to do it for me? ShedBoss

Erections at ShedBoss We started ShedBoss (11 years ago) The hunt was on for a team…….. We implemented things foreign in our industry 7 day payment terms, building contracts for all work, health and safety, weekly ‘learning’ meetings, back to basics marketing (look good and be seen …….for the right reasons),

Building Building is rewarding…….its why I do it! Building sh.t is fun!

So…….what's easy about building a Building Business? The Building So…….what's easy about building a Building Business? So…….what's more challenging?

For me it’s………… Having the right Team ………..good attitude ………..right skills ………..people who want to continue to learn People who see building as a career not a job

Building as a Career Earn as you learn…….apprenticeship Challenging Booming industry Ever changing industry Secure future Opportunities …business ownership, contract management, QS, Rewarding

From plan to construction

So what do I look for in a new young employee? Get off ya bum and don’t send mum! First impressions count …clean, tidy, how will they represent my company Eye contact, firm hand shake…….confidence Be prepared…. I’m going to ask questions! Know something about the company or type work we do Offer to come in for a trial

I like being practical.....building skills have set me up for life my path is still Orange!
