Introduction to Asian Culture  Religions- Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam.  Cultural Sub-regions- Central Asia, East Asia, North Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Asia.  Ethnic groups adapt to climate zones of Asia.  Primarily Hunter and Gatherers, some are transhumance.  Asian Art, music, cuisine, and literature, are important parts of Asian culture.  One of the most complex parts of Asian culture is the relationship between traditional cultures and the Western World.

Health Concepts The greatest challenge for Western healthcare professionals once they’ve grasped the basics of different cultural remedies and treatments is to understand the beliefs and attitudes about sickness that drive these ancient practices. Health beliefs can have a profound impact on the clinical care of Asian patients in the United States, affecting the accuracy of health histories and compliance with treatment recommendations from Western providers.

Causes of illness  Mental illness, lack of harmony, emotions, or an attack of evil spirits.  Health problems- Cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, cancer, nutritional defects, tuberculosis, and sickle cell disease.

Traditional Healers  Acupuncture  Herbs  Special food

Methods of treatments  Traditional Chinese Medicine  Herbal Chinese Medicine  Japanese Herbal Medicine  Tibetan Medicine  Traditional Vietnamese Medicine  Acupuncture  Moxibustion, Coin Rubbing & Cupping

Response to pain  Patients from Asian cultures may often exemplify stoicism in the face of pain, which directly relates to strong cultural values about the way a person should conduct themselves. Behaving in a dignified manner is very important. Some one who openly complains is considered to have poor social skills.

Religion  Hinduism, Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam.
