The dangers of reading too much into test score!! a It may send the message ‘my intelligence is fixed’- high? low? This may lead to ‘why bother trying?’ or ‘I must look clever.’ The result tells us nothing about potential- ‘the capacity to develop my skills with over time.’ It will not define their life! Secondary School will re-assess your But tests are a reality. How should we approach them? effort child.

Whensupporting your home do… childat Praise effort. Praise persistence. Praise their efforts to recall they already know. what Praise their efforts to practise. Praise their efforts to memorise. Praise their efforts to struggle and find ways to the answer.

Don’t… how bright they are. how gifted they are. ‘I was no good at tell your child Maths/Writing/Reading/Tests either’- it sends a message…intelligence is fixed. Talents and giftedness are starting points but effort is still required.

We all want them to do their best. If we feel they haven’t done their best presents an opportunity to reflect and learn. that Maybe Maybe better? Maybe IIII could have worked harder? organised my study IIII could have asked for help? responded to feedback?

What the tests will look like How we will be preparing the children What you need to know to support your child

How will we orientate the children to the new style of tests?

WhychangeSATS? Complexity & lack of clarity on progress Concerns about the validity and reliability levels and sub-levels. of Breadth in old curriculum PLUS use of Levels driving undue pace through the curriculum Pace = gaps in CRITICAL ’ knowledge.’ Need to make a more cohesive link between primary and secondary schools Engender trust in SATs assessments. -
