Wednesday and Thursday October 29 and 30 A Long Way Gone I can use colons correctly. I can demonstrate knowledge of denotation of words. I can identify conflict within a text. I can demonstrate comprehension of a text.

Colons Rule 2 A colon instead of a semicolon may be used between independent clauses when the second sentence explains, illustrates, paraphrases, or expands on the first sentence. Example: He got what he worked for: he really earned that promotion. If a complete sentence follows a colon, as in the previous example, it is up to the writer to decide whether to capitalize the first word. Capitalizing a sentence after a colon is generally a judgment call; if what follows a colon is closely related to what precedes it, there is no need for a capital. Note: A capital letter generally does not introduce a simple phrase following a colon. Example: He got what he worked for: a promotion.

Practice It’s been snowing for three days straight the roads aren’t very safe for driving. The library is very quiet tonight I’ll get a lot of work done. Write two independent clauses that are closely related. Join together with a colon. In my the backseat of my car, you will see the following toys that belong to Davis a red light saber, John Cena, and a green Matchbox car

WATCH OUT, tone and mood are similar! Tone is the author’s attitude toward his/her writing (characters and situations) and his/her reader. ▫A work can have more than 1 tone.
