Teacher Induction Programs Factors leading to increased interest in induction programs –Increase in accountability requirements since 1990s –Teacher turnover - 33% to 40% of new teachers leave the profession with 5 years –Inadequate preparation for teaching – experienced teachers “create a more effective learning experience for students”

Teacher Induction Programs Comprehensive Induction Programs are: –Intensive –Structured –Aligned with new teachers’ needs

Teacher Induction Programs Comprehensive Induction Programs include: –High-quality mentoring –Common planning time and collaboration –Ongoing professional development –Participation in an external network of teachers –Standards-based evaluation American Association of State Colleges and Universities

Teacher Induction Programs May help districts retain teachers Limited rigorous data on the impact of induction programs on student learning Funding sources may be a stumbling block –Title II, Part A of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) –American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Title I supplemental funds
