Math in Medicine By Sara Cerquera

Who Uses it?  Many Doctors and Nurses use math to prescribe medications.  Medical professionals use math to graph the rate of how successful a medical treatment was or of epidemics.  If you are in medicine you are required to have a certain understanding of math.

What is it used for?  They use it to figure out how much of a medication to give someone so they don’t cause an accident.  They can also use it to find statistics.

Different Types of math used in Medicine  Doctors have to convert pounds, milligrams and kilograms  To give someone a prescription you have to know their weight and then you have to convert that into milligrams so that you know how many kilograms of the medication you have to give.  A nurse must know ratios and proportions so they know how much of a medication they have to give  Not only that but the ratios and proportions will tell them how much later they need to give a patient a second dosage.

 Measures are used in the medical field. They are used to measure the persons body mass and then determine from there if the body mass is potentially causing health problems.  Statistics are another use in the medical field. For example, if a patient is getting surgery they will give the statistics on how those surgeries have gone in the past to determine the safety of the surgery.  Dimensions are a form of math that is used in a health care profession. When Doctors read X- rays, they use three-dimensional calculations as well as two-dimensional X-rays. This allows Doctors to see inside the body organs, such as the brain.

 You also have to know how to do graphing techniques. For example, children’s height and weight are put on a scale of median height and weight for children that age in the country.  You have to know the math for calculating billing which only really requires basic arithmetic.

Math is used in basic health- care like checkups  Weight/height  Blood pressure  Heart rate
