What is Hegemony Hegemony occur in schools in the matter of how race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, language, and special need variables affect all PK- 12 student learning. Students race, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status, health, academic, special needs, and family environment variables affect all students. For example: Teaching students how to value diversity means that the accomplished teacher models specific characteristics in the classroom.

Hegemony and Education

Segregation Creating an environment for all students to be successful in learning about the student’s differences in regards to demographics, medical history, learning disabilities, and family and cultural background.

Segregation THENNOW

Racism

“Racism is taught in our society, it is not automatic. It is learned behavior toward persons with dissimilar physical characteristics.” Alex Haley

Defending Poverty Influence Students from low-income and minority-group backgrounds, English language learners, and students with disabilities, are more likely to be denied diplomas, retained in grade, placed in a lower track, or unnecessarily put in remedial education programs. Students who live in low income areas are exposed to lower quality or standard of education than high income areas. (Wardle 2013; Kozol 2010).

Defending Poverty Influence “Parent involvement can make a big difference in how children learn and succeed in school” (Wardle, 2013 p221). A teacher consider treating students fairly or equally, they must make sure they give each student what he or she needs, even when that means each child gets something different in the class” (Newman, 2013, p 215).

Cultural Diversity

Culture is manifested in an infinite number of ways through social institutions, lived experiences, and the individual’s fulfillment of psychological and basic needs (Gollnick, D. & Chinn, C. 2009).

Cultural Diversity in our schools

Studies have consistently demonstrated parental and family school involvement has a positive influence on school related outcomes for children (Wardle, 2013).
