Adaptations SCIENCE

What does adaptation mean? any alteration (change) in the structure (physical) or function (behaviour) of an organism (living thing) or any of its parts that results from natural selection and by which the organism becomes better fitted to survive and multiply in its environment. Write the definition for ‘adaptation’ in your book using your own words.

Physical & Behavioural Adaptations Structural adaptations are physical features of an organism like the bill on a bird or the fur on a bear that help it survive. Other adaptations are behavioral. Behavioral adaptations are the things organisms do to survive. For example, bird calls and migration are behavioral adaptations.

CASE STUDY: TIGER Environment the tiger lives in: GRASSLAND & FOREST

CASE STUDY: TIGER PHYSICAL/STRUCTURAL ADAPTATIONS The tiger's striped coat helps them blend in well with the sunlight filtering through the treetops to the jungle floor. The tiger's seamless camouflage to their surroundings is enhanced because the striping also helps break up their body shape, making them difficult to detect for unsuspecting prey. The tiger's sense of hearing is so sharp that they are capable of hearing infrasound, which are sound waves below the range of normally audible sound (20 hertz). Tigers use infrasound to communicate over long distances or dense forest vegetation because the sound is capable of passing through a variety of mediums such as trees and mountains.

CASE STUDY: TIGER BEHAVIOURAL ADAPTATIONS Tigers, unlike many other cat species, readily enter water to cool themselves and in the pursuit of prey. They are powerful swimmers and capable of traversing lakes and rivers. Tigers coexist with other predators such as leopards, Asiatic wild dogs, brown bears and wolves throughout most of their range. Usually there is little interaction between species especially since tigers are mostly nocturnal (active at night) and the other species are mainly diurnal (active during the day).

Write your answer in your book using your own words. What is the difference between ‘physical adaptations’ and ‘behavioural adaptations’ Write your answer in your book using your own words. STRUCTURAL/PHYSICAL: Something the living thing has. BEHAVIOUR: Something the living thing does.
