Tablet vs. Distance Traveled By Jay, Tom, Chloe, and David

Hypothesis: We think by adding more tablets the cap will travel further than having fewer tablets. This was proven wrong.

We used Alka-Seltzer tablets to make a cap fly off a film canister.

Materials water, Alka-Seltzer tablets, pvc pipe launcher, film canister cap, syringe, meter stick colored dots, and notebook

Procedure Put the film canister in the pvc pipe. Then we screwed the film canister in. We put the pvc. pipe on the ground in front of a tape line. We filled a cup with up with water. Then we used a syringe to suck 20 ml out of the cup. We put the water in the canister with the syringe. Then we put Alka-Seltzer tablets in the water in the canister. We quickly put the cap on the top of the film canister. Someone stands in the area where they think the cap will land. KABLAMO!!! Then the person who is standing puts a sticker where the cap lands. After that you have to measure the distance the cap lands. The final step to the process is to record the data of the distance that the cap travels.

Tablets vs. Distance Traveled # TabsTrial 1Trial 2Trial 3Mean 1/ Number of Tablets Distance Traveled

6m. 5m. 4m. 3m. 2m. 1m. 0m Tablets vs. Distance Traveled Number of tablets Distance traveled

Conclusion We found out that our hypothesis was wrong, and invalid. We found this out by testing it. For example, when we put 3 tablets in the canister we got the distance of 5.64m, but when we put 1/2 a tablet in the pipe it went 5m 73cm proving that putting more tablets doesn't make the cap go further. So our conclusion is that the cap does NOT travel longer with more tablets.

New Questions What will happen if we put 5 1/2 tablets in the canister? What will happen if we use a liquid that’s not water? (for example, milk) What will happen if we lower or higher the angle of the launcher?
