Cells

 What are cells? What do you know about cells? Quickwrite

 The microscope was invented during the 17 th century  Robert Hooke was one of the first people to use a microscope. He looked at plants and a material called cork.  He observed that the cork was made of hundreds of subdivisions and thought they looked like tiny rooms  He called these cells History

 Cells are the most elementary, basic unit of life  Organisms can be as simple as a single cell or as complex as plants and animals.

 Place a drop of methylene blue in the middle of the slide  With the wide end of the toothpick, gently scrape the inside of your cheek  Swirl the toothpick in the methylene blue dye  Dilute the methylene with 2-3 drops of water  Place a coverslip over the scrapings  Blot any extra water away using the blotter paper  Throw away toothpick Cheek Cells

 Use your cheek scraping to complete page 27  When you are finished, clean your slide and coverslip using the soap water solution provided Page 27

 What does this investigation suggest about the construction of the human body?  Do you think all cells in the human body are the same?  If all the millions of different cells in the human body are alive, how do they get the resources, like food and water, that they need to stay alive?  It has been suggested that all life is aquatic. How do you think that applies to humans?
