So what is DevOps  According to Professor Wikipedia “ DevOps (a clipped compound of "development" and "operations") is a culture, movement or practice that emphasizes the collaboration and communication of both software developers and other information- technology (IT) professionals while automating the process of software delivery and infrastructure changes”

What does this mean for us?  Adoption of DevOps has been responsible for very significant reductions in defects (60X).  Systems can be deployed much more quickly (168X faster)  Systems can be deployed much more frequently (30X)  Lean management and continuous delivery practice create conditions of delivering value faster sustainably  High performance is achievable in greenfield, brownfield or legacy Ref Puppet Labs DevOps Report

What are we doing about it?  Innovation fund project (ITI and APPS)  Engaging practitioners in sector (York)  DevOps Simulation ( APPS, ITI, Schools, G2G3)  Adoption of Automation (Infrastructure, Software implementation, Testing)  Puppet for SITS?

Gartner's Recommendations  Mode 2 organizations should seek to implement automation to enhance speed, while Mode 1 organizations should leverage automation to improve consistency and reduce cost.  While Mode 1 organizations typically have much more rigorous change management processes, they should work to become more like a Mode 2 firm by increasing the number of changes allowed without additional approvals (such as via a change advisory board, or CAB).  Both Mode 1 and Mode 2 organizations should apply DevOps systems-oriented principles to ensure that each style is able to deliver services that meet customer requirements in the cadence necessary.  Mode 1 IT organizations should look to DevOps as a bridge to a Mode 2 orientation by continuing to assess where other patterns and practices of DevOps can enable a Mode 1 environment to deliver better service to customers.
