The main goals of the new design was to reduce operating costs by:  Optimizing the climbing altitude  The route of the flight  Decent to the runway Other Goals:  Reduction in aircraft weight  Increased reliability

 A new paradigm had to be adopted in the way pilots were trained to fly.  Pilots needed to learn practical computer skills  They needed to understand how automation works.
