Your Success in English Class

  A personalized textbook  A working portfolio that contains all of your notes, assignments, quizzes, terms, all in one place. What is an Interactive Notebook?

  Be a creative, independent, and reflective thinker and writer throughout the year.  Express your own ideas and process in order to apply the information and skills learned during class. Purpose

 Pages in Notebook  Left Side  Right Side Teacher Information Student Information

  The left side is to record your thinking, reflections, thoughts, impressions, connections, and wonderings.  The left side belongs to you!  Apply skills learned in class  Use grafts, charts, and diagrams  Make connections between new and prior knowledge  Questions  Homework  Classwork  Brainstorming Left Side

  Vocabulary Cards  Compare & Contrast Terminology  Poems  Writing Assignments  Creative Designs  Conceptual Frameworks  Mini Posters  Think-Pair-Share Activites Examples of LSAs

  The right side belongs to Ms. Starr  The right side contains all testable information  Vocabulary  Cornell Notes  Class reading  Handouts  Content and language objectives  Study guides Right Side

  Cornell Notes:  Literary Terms  Sentence Patterns Practice  Author’s Purpose  Reading Strategies  Vocabulary Terms  In-class Assignments  Close Reading of Texts  The Writing Process Examples of RSAs

  Composition Notebook  College-ruled  No spiral notebooks  You will need one per semester  Highlighters  Glue  Tape (for page extenders)  Colored Pencils  Markers  Scissors Materials

  No ripped out pages or torn corners  No doodling that doesn’t relate to classwork  Each page needs a date, title, and page number  Everyone’s ISN must match!  Update your Table of Contents daily Maintaining Your Interactive Student Notebook

  Your notebook will be 30% of your total grade each semester.  Your notebooks will be evaluated unannounced and periodically. Each notebook evaluation will be a notebook “test” score.  Therefore, it is imperative you maintain and bring your notebook to class everyday! Grades

  If you forgot your notebook when a notebook check is announced, you may bring it the very next day, but it will be deducted 30%.  After two calendar days, no points can be earned for that notebook evaluation.  Any right side assignment that is out of order will automatically be deducted 10% for that particular notebook evaluation. Deductions for Lateness and Lack of Order

  The first thing you need to do is check my moodle website on the PHS webpage. Go to PHS high school home page  student  online learning  Eng 3-4 Starr  This will give you an outline of the day’s events and the homework assigned.  You need to see me before or after school when you return to school. I will keep a master copy of the class’ interactive notebook with the formatting in order for you update your notebook.  This is very important! Do not fall behind in keeping your notebook current. Remember, notebook checks are unannounced. What if I’m absent?

  You will need to immediately start another notebook.  You will need to view and copy the class’ notebook outside of regular class.  You will need to make up the LSAs.  The percentage you are currently earning will be used as a temporary Interactive Notebook score until you are back on track. What if I lose it?

  You will be held responsible for day to day assignments, homework, & Cornell notes.  At the end of each week, stamps are highlighted and counted for credit. Late stamps are never an option.  I will grade your daily assignments in class based on this rubric: Got Stamps? 3 Points (a WOW product) all requirements are evident and EXCEEDED the product is VERY neatly done and EXTREMELY well- organized the product shows LOTS of creativity completed on time 2 Points (what is EXPECTED) the requirements are evident the product is neatly done and organized the product shows some creatively completed on time 1 Point (One or More Parts are Missing) few of the requirements are evident the product is fairly neatly done and partly organized the product shows little creativity completed on time

 Initial Set Up Inside Front Cover  Gems of Wisdom  extra credit opportunity  authentic reflection  spontaneous assignment  record of learning process  points are added each notebook evaluation  gems of wisdom credit = one extra-credit stamp First Page  Author’s Page #1 Your Name Period Decorate the Page!

  Pages 2-5 in your notebook  Title each of these pages “Table of Contents”  Each page needs to look like this: Table of Contents Assignment Title Page #
