Sources of Data About Regions and Areas Dr Orian Brook University of Stirling

Census Data

Data on eg Council Areas, Health Boards, Output Areas, Constituencies, CHPs, Electoral Wards – varies by output type One of few official sources with data for Postcode Sectors Area Profiles: best for comparing up to two areas on a range of indicators (shown in Webinar 2) Maps and Charts: best for comparing a wider range of Council Areas only, on a number of indicators Standard Outputs – good for comparing non-standard area groupings, though not v small areas All indicators are cross-tabulated, mostly by sex and age Census Data Explorer

Neighbourhood Statistics

Data from a wide variety of sources – select area or theme to explore what’s available National Records of Scotland – Census, Annual Population Estimates NHS Scotland – eg Breastfeeding rates, Low Birthweight Scottish Government – Govt Surveys plus eg Benefits data But eg Scottish Household Survey most recent data 2011, data from 2013 SHS only has smoking rates … Transport Scotland – numbers of stations, passengers, delays due to congestion etc Lots to explore! Open Access to Official Statistics

Scottish Household Survey

Data from annual report, including crosstabs, available to be filtered by Council Area Helpful to know the structure of overall annual report Sometimes numbers of respondents per category get rather low SHS 2014 Excel Workbook

NESSTAR

Many more Scottish, UK and international surveys available Will need to register for most datasets Can create custom cross-tabulations including by area where available Must remember to use weightings A number of video tutorial on using Nesstar for different themes, eg housing data/themes/housing/analysinghttps:// data/themes/housing/analysing UK Data Service Data Explorer
