LARP Collaboration Meeting 15 Nov 1-3, 2010 A2C- Materials Working Group Arup Ghosh (coordinator), Emanuela Barzi, Dan Cheng, Dan Dietderich, Soren Prestemon, GianLuca Sabbi, Ezio Todesco, Sasha Zlobin bnl - fnal- lbnl - slac US LHC Accelerator Research Program

AGENDA  Conductor characterization/QA. Protocol for verification of as- delivered strand, cable qualification, coil witness samples.  Cable insulation plan, in particular regarding evaluation and transition to new options  Cables for LHQ (consider two cases, 3.3 m coil length - same as LQ - and 4 m coil length). Assume 2 UL in FY11, 4 in FY12, 4 in FY13. Are current procurements able to sustain production, in addition to LQ/HQ? Can we get a reasonable yield from the conductor inventory, given typical strand piece length? Based on past experience, what yield can we expect taking into account production issues (crossovers, etc)  Confirm cable production schedule for LQ/HQ in FY11, matched to conductor delivery and coil fabrication schedule  Status of cored cable R&D, next steps leading to integration in HQ coil fabrication

Conductor Qualification Billet Qualification –Rely on OST data –Does LARP need further testing ?  Not at present Cable Qualification –This is important and needs to be completed prior to coil winding. –Minimum 3 extracted strand and one round wire –HT as specified for coil reaction HT Qualification –Witness sample tests of extracted strands –Tests done at two measurement labs ?  YES –Minimum of three extracted strand and one round wire at each site. Is this sufficient ?  React more extracted strands (6) test 3. –1.9 K tests ?  NOT for routine testing

New Insulation Development 4 Traditional Sleeve Original Braided Sleeve Used on mirrors TQM03 and LQM01 and test coil TQ36 LARP CM15 – SLAC – Nov 1-3, 2010 Giorgio Ambrosio

 Not implement alternative insulation scheme for LQ  Develop and qualify new scheme for HQ coils  Converge with the coil-group about choice of insulation  S2-glass with Silane binder, ceramic-glass fiber with 636 binder  Braided on cable (requires development), tape- wrap (available, thicker than present sleeve)  Impacts coil re-design.  Options need to be explored rapidly  Implement final choice in LHQ

From the piece lengths, what is the cable yield; how much is lost ?  In the past 18 months OST has delivered 0.8 mm wire from 5 billets of 54/61, and 5 billets of 108/127  Total wire delivered with the requirement that the minimum length of wire is 350 m :  175 kg of 54/61  145 kg of 108/127  24 kg from one billet was only drawn to 1.0 mm and sent to CERN  For the next phase of wire procurement, the minimum wire length is 550 m.  We also consider minimum wire length of 1 km

Piece Length of 54/61 at 0.8 mm 5 billets delivered to LARP

Piece Length of 108/127 at 0.8 mm 5 billets delivered to LARP

Cabling loss calculations The unit lengths used for the different length magnets is: LHQ 3.3 m long: Coil UL is 314 m LHQ 4 m long : Coil UL is 380 m LHQ 5 m long: Coil UL is 475 m Cabling loss is the total strand remnants as a % of total wire lengths after mapping the piece lengths to the required UL. An example is shown.

Cabling Loss for 54/61 wire

Cabling Loss for 108/127

 Strand yield for the 108/127  350 m  550 m : 5% lower yield  550 m  1000 m : 5% lower yield  We will re-evaluate after the next large delivery of 180 kg in Feb’11 OST  Cabling mapping losses ~ 10%  For 4 m LHQ requiring UL of 380 m, minimum length specification of 550 m is sufficient.  4 m UL requires kg of wire  In cable production assume 10% loss due to cabling problems like cross-over, wire breakage etc.

Nb 3 Sn HQ-Strand Specification LARP-MAG-M-8002 Rev-E RRP 108/127 with increased Copper 108/127

Conductor Procurement of 108/127 In FY10 –88 Kg of wire: Jan’10 –67 kg of wire: Aug’10 Next delivery of 67 kg  Dec’10 –On order 800 kg of 108/127 wire Delivery in CY 2011 In FY 2011 –Plan to order 380 kg –Additional 200 kg (from contingency) –Delivery in CY 2012

Strand Production and Cabling Plan Cable ID ending in R denotes cable made using standard 2-pass method Cable ID without R denotes cable made using 1-pass with annealed strand Cable ID ending in C denotes cable made with annealed strand with core. HQ1: 1 m HQ, HQ4 : 4 m LHQ 1 UL of HQ1 requires 18 kg, HQ4: 72 kg The cable for the latter series of HQ1 coils will likely be made with a core.

Cored Cable  1 UL of HQ cable made with 25  m SS core using annealed wire, single pass  Cable made to the same width and mid-thickness as non-core cable.  Concern of over-compaction of cable  Can be mitigated either by increasing cable thickness  Or wire diameter can be reduced by mm  0.79 mm  Re-evaluate width of cable  Coil #12 using cored-cable has been wound

 By mid-2011, there will be sufficient conductor to begin LHQ cable fabrication  Cabling plan will be iterated as the magnet plans and the coil fabrication plan is extended beyond FY’11.  Other topics discussed:  If and when can Ti-ternary 108/127 strand be introduced into the magnets  From the CDP program 90 kg will be delivered in Mar’11
