Order of Acquisition (morphemes) Put these into the order that children acquire them… Possessive ‘s Auxiliary ‘be’ (he is coming) Present progressive (mummy coming) Copula (Jane is a nice girl) Third person singular (he runs) Plural s (two books) Regular past (she walked) Irregular past (she went) Articles ‘the’ and ‘a’

Negation Five forms of negation in English: 1. Not (‘nt) 2. Negative words (nobody) 3. No before nouns (no books are available) 4. Negative adverbs (nowhere/never) 5. Negative prefixes (dis/non/un)

Stages of negation Opposition to a proposition ( months shaking head) No (first fifty words) Negative + X (no go, no book, no ketchup/not go, not book, not ketchup.) Subject + no + X (Mummy no/not go park) More complex sentences/other negations (I don’t like it). NB. Early on, ‘no’ and ‘not’ interchangeable with ‘don’t’ and ‘can’t’. Negatives of more auxiliary verbs (aren’t/doesn’t/isn’t) and past tense forms.
