ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS SESSION 1

 Special Educational Needs (SEN)  Gifted and Talented (G+T)  English as an Additional Language (EAL) ADDITIONAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (AEN)

Brainstorm and come up with a definition. WHAT ARE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS?

SEN Code of Practice (2001) definition:  Children have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. WHAT ARE SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS?

Children have a learning difficulty if they: a.have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age; or b.have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for children of the same age in school. Important: Children must not be regarded as having a learning difficulty solely because the language or form of language of their home is different from the language in which they will be taught. LEARNING DIFFICULTIES

Brainstorm and Share HOW DO WE IDENTIFY WHEN A CHILD MIGHT HAVE AN SEN?

 Observation  Achievement against learning outcomes in planning  Achievement against APP level criteria  Parent concerns HOW DO WE IDENTIFY WHEN A CHILD MIGHT HAVE AN SEN?

HOW DO WE SUPPORT THE CHILD WITH SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS ? Flagging Raising initial concerns. In Class Action (InCAPS) / Individual Education Plan (IEP) LS team is directly involved with the child Exit / Monitor

Brainstorm and come up with a definition. WHAT IS MEANT BY GIFTED AND TALENTED?

 Gifted students are those whose potential is distinctly above average in one or more of the following domains: intellectual, creative, social and physical.  Talented students are those whose skills are distinctly above average in one or more areas of human performance. WHAT IS MEANT BY GIFTED AND TALENTED?

 English as an Additional Language (EAL) refers to the use or study of English by speakers of other languages.  English may be the child’s second, third or even more language. WHAT IS MEANT BY ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE?

 Intake Interview  Parent nomination  Teacher Observation and Nomination HOW DO WE IDENTIFY A CHILD FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE?

HOW DO WE SUPPORT THE CHILD FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE ?  In-class support by EAL Specialists  Planning includes differentiation for EAL  Language rich environment  Use of visual aids and non-verbal communication  Resources in English and home language  Explain concepts in home language and allow children to explain their thinking in both home language and English  Dual Language Program from next school year  Encourage home language to continue at home  EAL training for teachers and teaching assistants

 Choose a child in your class who is on the SEN, G+T or EAL register.  Look at the planning for your class and at how the curriculum has been differentiated to support that child’s learning.  During the week, observe a 20 minute session of the child’s learning when they are taking part in the differentiated activities.  What was the target / learning objective?  What special resources were used?  What language was used to support the child’s learning (vocabulary, questions, etc)? REFLECTIVE TASK

 a list of children in your class on the LS, G+T and EAL register  all your year group’s planning for that week BRING NEXT WEEK
