Purpose Continuing a dialogue about relationships in the African American community.

Ground Rules  Respect  What goes on in BIC stays in BIC  Do not interrupt when someone else is talking  No profanity or the “N-word”  No personal attacks, keep it general  Have fun!

Presentation Overview  Why do we care so much about relationships?  State of Black Relationships in America Statistics  Last Years’ Survey Results  Discussion and Best Practices

Statistics  Over half of African Americans between the ages of 24 and 34 have never married.  African Americans have the highest divorce rate of all the major ethnic groups in the US.  More than two-thirds of African American children are born to unmarried parents.  62% of African American households are headed by a single parent.  There is a large disparity between the number of available women and men.

Perceptions  What do you think men want in an intimate/romantic relationship?  What do you think women want in intimate/romantic relationship?  What do you think are the major problems in intimate/romantic relationships ?  What factors do you think contribute successful intimate/romantic relationships?

Last Year’s Survey Results

I’ve done the laundry and put it away!! (boris kodjoe)

The Body Image Debate…  Is body image the only thing that is sexy in a relationship?  As we get older does body image matter as much?

Lights Camera Action

What do you think Which clip represents how you want your relationship to be? Why?

Debate Groups 1. Black men want anything that satisfies their temporary needs. 2. Black women want power. Women like to be in control or think they are in control. 3. Black men want sex and space. They want you to be in their life but not to have a title or play a significant role. 4. Black women need lots of attention.

Best Practices Audience ideas of things we can do to help Black relationships…

Effective Communication Skills  Active listening  Proper body language  Paraphrase what you think the person has said.  Ask questions  Keep a positive and polite tone  Remember winning the argument does not mean you win the fight.

THANK YOU!
