What does a zoo do?

Which of the following work is carried out by a zoo? Scientific research Re-introducing animals into the wild Looking after animals in captivity Protecting wild animals from poachers Breeding endangered animals Helping to stop illegal wildlife trade e.g. rhino horns Education for schools and communities

Which of the following work is carried out by a zoo? The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) does all of these things! RZSS is the charity that owns Edinburgh Zoo and Highland Wildlife Park. Our mission is to “connect people with nature and safeguard species from extinction”. As well as looking after the animals in our two parks, we help to protect animals in the wild by carrying out scientific research, breeding endangered animals and supporting conservation projects around the world. Our zoos help us to raise money for our conservation projects, as well as doing research…

Where in the world? Can you match RZSS’ conservation work with the correct country?

Where in the world? Where do we carry out giant panda conservation? Giant panda conservation

Where in the world? In China! In 2011, Edinburgh Zoo welcomed two Giant Pandas (Tian Tian and Yang Guang). As part of the agreement with the China Wildlife Conservation Association (CWCA), we now support over 40 related research projects. Giant panda conservation

Where in the world? Where do we study Giant Armadillos? Giant Armadillo Conservation Project

Where in the world? In Brazil! Very little was known about Giant Armadillos before the project started. Our team are tracking these amazing animals by using their burrows, camera traps and radio transmitters to learn more about them. This information will then help us to know how they can be protected. Giant Armadillo Conservation Project

Where in the world? Where do we look after chimpanzees? Budongo Conservation Field Station

Where in the world? Our Budongo Conservation Field Station is located in Uganda. Here our team study wild populations of chimpanzees and learn about their behaviour. They also help to protect the chimpanzees from threats of illegal logging and poaching. Ex-poachers are now employed to remove snares from the forest. Budongo Conservation Field Station

Where in the world? Where have we re-introduced beavers and are helping to save wildcats from extinction?

Where in the world? Right here in Scotland! We are part of a pioneering project- The Scottish Beaver Trial- which saw beavers re-introduced into Scotland after being extinct for 400 years. We are also helping to save Scottish wildcats through genetic research and captive breeding in our Highland Wildlife Park.

Your task Choose one RZSS conservation project and design a poster about it to present to the rest of the class. In your poster include… - Where the project is happening - What animals the project will help - What threats the animals there face To help you with your research, visit
